Manglik (Mangal or Kuja) dosha is the placement of Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of a birth chart, counted from the ascendant, the Moon, or Venus. The textbook concern is friction and loss in marriage. The same textbooks then list cancellations that remove the dosha in a large share of the charts that carry it — and those cancellations are the part that gets left out of a hurried match.
Count from three points, not one
The dosha is checked from the ascendant, from the Moon, and from Venus. A chart that is Manglik from the ascendant but not from the Moon and Venus is considered mild. Only a chart that is Manglik from all three points is treated as full strength. Most online calculators check the ascendant alone and report the worst case.
The cancellations
- Mars in its own sign or exaltation. Mars in Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn in any of the six houses cancels the dosha.
- Mars in the sign of a friend. Mars in Leo, Sagittarius or Pisces in the relevant houses reduces the dosha substantially.
- By house-sign pairing. The classical verse: Mars in the first house in Aries, in the fourth in Scorpio, in the seventh in Capricorn, in the eighth in Cancer, in the twelfth in Sagittarius — no dosha.
- Jupiter's aspect or conjunction. Jupiter aspecting Mars, or Mars with Jupiter, softens the dosha considerably.
- Mars with or aspected by Saturn or Rahu. In many lineages a malefic with Mars neutralises the dosha — the reasoning is that the aggression is already contained.
- Both partners Manglik. The dosha in both charts cancels; this is the most-used and most-reliable cancellation in practice.
- Age. Several texts hold that the dosha loses force after 28, since Mars's maturity is complete.
What it is actually pointing at
Mars in the houses of self, family, home, partner, longevity and bed is an indicator of temper, impatience and, in the eighth and twelfth, of separation or loss. The question in a match is whether the other chart can absorb it: a partner with a strong Venus and a well-placed Moon usually can. Guna Milan's Bhakoot and Nadi kutas are looking at the same compatibility from a different angle, which is why a match is judged on the whole 36 points, not on Mars alone.
What to do with a Manglik report
Ask for the three counts (ascendant, Moon, Venus), the sign Mars occupies, and whether Jupiter or Saturn touch it. If the answer is "Mars in Capricorn in the seventh, aspected by Jupiter", there is no dosha to remedy. If the report cannot give those four facts, it has not actually checked.
Common questions
Is Manglik dosha the same as Kuja dosha? Yes — Kuja is the Sanskrit name for Mars; Manglik is the North Indian usage.
Do the remedies (Kumbh Vivah, Mangal puja) work? They address the belief more than the chart. The chart-based answer is the cancellation list above; if none applies, the practical remedy is choosing a partner whose chart carries the same dosha or a strong Venus.
